The Ten Must Hear Tracks of July

Another month has passed, and more great music has been released. Check out some of my favourite songs that were released this month.

Temporary Love – Joey

Joey, formerly known as Joelle was a contestant on X-Factor Australia in 2012 as part of a duo, ‘Good Question’ and then in 2013 as a solo artist. Joey has chased her dreams after X-Factor Australia, moving to the United States to work on her upcoming debut album out in August. ‘Temporary Love’ is the first single off the album and is a great mix R&B music infused with live recorded instruments to give it more of a soulful and raw sound that I love. The song is an ear-worm and has infectious hooks. With Joey’s meaningful lyrics, and her unique vocals giving the kind of passion you don’t always hear in mainstream music, Joey is a force to be reckoned with, and Australian radio needs to get a hold of this single to support independent Aussie artists!

Regular Touch – Vera Blue

Vera Blue is another former reality singing contest star, after participating in the Voice Australia as Celia Pavey. Pavey turned her name to Vera Blue for her current projects, and saw more mainstream success occur after featuring on Illy’s ‘Papercuts’. Blue is out with a new album, and ‘Regular Touch’ is one of the stand out songs off the album. Blue’s vocals sound very folky and powerful, and then are mixed with a very alternative, and house sound with a distinctive drop after the chorus’. ‘Regular Touch’ is a great experimental sounding song.

Learn to Let Go – Kesha

I am so glad that Kesha is back, showcasing her true self in her music. Kesha’s new album titled ‘Rainbow’, out in August, is set to be a very personal story told through her music about the current issues Kesha has been facing for several years. ‘Learn to Let Go’ is a very radio-friendly pop song with a very personal and meaningful story told through the lyrics and how the song is sang with such emotion about how Kesha has been telling everyone to be strong and fight through what they’re facing, and now she is doing the same thing and letting go.

Fetish – Selena Gomez featuring Gucci Mane

Selena Gomez has continued to release bop after bop. From a very pop sounding ‘Bad Liar’, to a sultrier R&B sounding ‘Fetish’, Selena Gomez has become a very experimental pop star. The steamy song features a guest verse appearance from rapper Gucci Mane which gives the song a bit more of an R&B feeling and depth that Gomez’s vocals and beat help deliver.

Back To You – Louis Tomlinson featuring Bebe Rexha & Digital Farm Animals

The structure of this song is very weird. Everything about this song doesn’t scream a typical mainstream structured song in my opinion, but I love everything about the song. It is the first song where the former 1D singer is the main artist, yet the track starts off with Bebe Rexha singing the first verse and chorus solo. I think that is a very smart move and is a unique thing to do. Rexha’s vocals are unique and one of a kind. From her low vocals in the verse, to her higher range in the chorus, it gives the song more dynamic. Tomlinson then appears singing the second verse and chorus. Rexha and Tomlinson’s chemistry throughout their harmonies in the song creates more flare that the song may be lacking in the beat.

New Rules – Dua Lipa

‘New Rules’ is most certainly one of my favourite songs of the year. Dua Lipa has become a sensation over the past year, just releasing her self titled album last month. ‘New Rules’ is a very infectious song about basically trying to avoid your ex. The song has been constructed to perfection, with the chorus being one of the catchiest hooks this year. The track is indeed possibly the best song off her debut album, and has a different sound to the rest of her album. Keep an eye out for Dua Lipa, as she is coming to kill the pop game.

The Calling – L D R U

The track is a very EDM sounding song, heavily focused on electronic synth sounding beats and drops. The song features uncredited vocals that are pitched and distorted throughout the song when the vocals appear that help compliment the EDM sound of the song.

The Way I Love Her – Stanaj

The Albanian singer-songwriter gained mainstream attention after his single ‘Romantic’ attracted many radio plays. Stanaj teamed up with famous producer, RedOne for his latest single. The single is an infused pop and R&B track that showcases off Stanaj’s smooth vocals with sultry riffs and a catchy beat.

True Feeling – Galantis

‘True Feeling’ is the latest single from EDM producers Galantis, and the song is somewhat different to previous releases of theirs. The song’s message is very uplifting and features vocals from Wrabel. The song’s beat is very tropical and summery that goes hand in hand with Wrabel’s smooth vocals.

A Lie – French Montana featuring The Weeknd & Max B

‘A Lie’ is a stand out single off rapper French Montana’s latest album, ‘Jungle Rules’. The song features vocals from one of the biggest R&B singers, The Weeknd and Max B, who is apparently currently serving time in jail. Sorry buddy. The Weeknd’s vocals helps the song become more appealing, but overall the beat and Montana’s spits create a great Hip-Hop and R&B infused track.
