How to care for your platinum blonde hair

So you've done it. You've worked up the courage, you've sat in that chair (Probably, at one point, even said to yourself "Is that really what I look like?" in that 'just washed, still wet, flat hair ' drowned-rat moment) - and now, you're blonde. Not just any blonde. Oh no, you're right up there. You're platinum blonde. The whole nine yards.

Welcome my friend, to the wonderful world of premium white bleached club. You've endured the pain and the patience and you're finally here. But everything is not what it seems, fellow Lucius Malfoy cosplayer. You have a lot of maintaining to do. Herein we explain the many dos and do nots of the pearly hair club.

1. Two words: Purple shampoo

We know, we know. You've been told this a million times. But that doesn't mean we're all on top of this step. Do you remember your good 'ol primary school art classes? You may even have vague memories of learning about the colour wheel. Notice how purple is on the opposing side of yellow? Great! This is why your trusty violet shampoo is so crucial. Your deep purples and violets will counteract and attack those awful cooper and gold tones you may get if you begin to neglect your new light locks.

Our recommendation: Apply a generous amount of your desired purple shampoo (Fudge's Clean Blonde purple shampoo can be found at Priceline and will set you back $21.99). Keep this violet coating of goodness in for as long as you can. I'm not talking in the time it takes to shave your legs, I'm talking 'build an entire sims family, custom house, watch them grow old and lock them all in the bathroom' time (You've all done it). Once this is rinsed out, don't repeat, purple shampoo can strip your hair dry if used in succession. Then bravo! You've got your lovely light locks back, and fresher than ever.

2. Avoid dyed, or dark oily hair products

This may have been something you weren't aware of - but using shampoos, oils and other products in your hair which aren't clear, or white - may temporarily dye your hair, or make it brassy. You can kiss goodbye your Moroccan oil, platinum member. If you can, try clear oils, such this this one, or avoid oils and creams all together. We understand this is a tough goodbye to make, but you'll thank us in the long run when your hair stays pristine.

3. Masks, masks, masks.

As a newly joined member of the bleach club, one of the first things you'll realise is how straw-like your hair will be since your time in the chair. You can chuck out all your remaining conditioner, because from now on, it won't be able to save you. Hair masks are your new best friend, and the more you reserve time to keep one in (This does sometimes mean planning your hair washing in advance, welcome to the high maintainence life of a pearly), the better your result will be.

This is not to say this will always be the case, but you should be reserving one mask treatment a week, at minimum. If you're someone who washes their hair every other day, try increasing this purple shampoo + mask regime to twice a week.

Our recommendation: After your purple shampoo is rinsed out, hop out of shower and towel dry your hair somewhere between damp and dry. Slather your desired mask (We recommend this one, it is cheap and incredibly effective) and once again, keep in for as long as possible. Unfortunately the hastened 10-minute mask is no longer going to cut it (Are you starting to realise that the directions on the back of hair products no longer apply to a platinum blonde? Us, too). If you're also a false tanner, now would be the time to apply your 2-hr tan. That way, in 2 hours you can rinse your hair and your tans guide colour off (What beauty efficiency!) in the same shower.

And you're done! You're rivalling Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Kardashian AND T-Swift in a simple three step process. Your new hair is time-consuming, no doubt. But when blondes have more fun, who can argue with a bit of upkeep? Not us, that's for sure.

Until next time, beauty babes! Xx
