My first Halal Snack Pack

I walked into the room. Hands damp with sweat I told myself, “Act cool, you haven’t done anything wrong.” I walk up to the her, hiding my trembling hands as I say, “I've never had a Halal Snack Pack.”

Her mouth dropped open, and she took a profoundly dramatic breath, “What do you mean?” she said. I told her in great detail how I hadn’t understood what it was, or even that it was a type of food. I told her about how I kept seeing people talk about it on Facebook, and yet it never clicked. She looked up from her lukewarm tea, which had gotten cold somewhere between my consideration on my foodie status and my worry that I wasn't keeping up with current affairs. She put her hand on mine and said, “It’s okay, we can fix this.”

So, I set off with eager eyes and an empty stomach, to try a Halal Snack Pack (HSP). I got my friend, Manoli Luxford, a self-proclaimed HSP enthusiast, and the music contributor for Quite Frankly, and we set off to get my very first HSP. He claimed that, “the key to a good HSP is to make sure you get a good balance of beef and chicken, with crispy chips. The holy trinity of BBQ, Garlic and Chilli Sauce balance it all out, blending well together to make perfect flavours. A key factor in a great HSP is the addition of cheese.” I thought I would skip the Garlic sauce, only because it was the first day back at university, which meant I had to socialise. And you know what they say about meeting your future life partner at university? Well, that statistic decreases 100% with garlic breath.

I eagerly lined up at the kebab store. Stress filled my body as I realised I was there and didn't knowing what to order or say, but I trooped on. I trooped on for the HSP. I ordered a mixed meat HSP and got my plastic fork (an actual fork, not a spork, can this day get ANY BETTER?) and waited patiently for my beloved HSP. Before I knew it, they had called out my number, and I saw it. Just right in front of me, looking at me as if it was saying, “I will be your one and only.” I took it outside on the balcony and dug in.

I am sorry to all vegans and vegetarians, but it was incredible. There is something so special about non-soggy chips with different sauces that keep my hopes up for a good future. A future filled with rainbows, unicorns and BBQ sauce. I would genuinely recommend a HSP if you haven’t had one. Would also recommend not wearing tight jeans with a belt while eating it, I can confirm it doesn’t work well.
