This Week’s 5 Best New Releases

In the Name of Love – Martin Garrix & Bebe Rexha

DJ Martin Garrix and pop vocalist Bebe Rexha have joined forces for this EDM/pop like hit. Rexha’s vocals shine through in this song, in a much softer and less hard-hitting beat usually heard from Garrix, like in ‘Animals’. The verses are simplistic, with a combination of piano, bass, and guitar strums. These all provide the rhythm for Rexha’s melodic vocals, which provides listeners with an emotional and soaring vocal performance, arguably her best to date. The chorus’ beat drop gives me Flume vibes with Garrix’s own flare added onto it. The best mix of a pop ballad lyrics, melody and future house vibes. https://youtu.be/AeGfss2vsZg

Closer – The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey The newest hit from the duo behind the smash hits ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ and ‘Roses’, have collaborated with pop up and up-coming singer Halsey. The track is already charting in the top ten of iTunes since its release on Friday. ‘Closer’ narrates a couple's first sparks of rekindled romance following several years of absence. One half of the duo Drew Taggart shares vocals in the track for the first time, singing the verse. After the chorus, Halsey sings the second verse explaining her part of the story. The chorus’ synth, mid-tempo drop is generic, yet somehow entices you in. https://youtu.be/PT2_F-1esPk

Bones – Jess & Matt The boyfriend/girlfriend duo from X-Factor Australia 2015 are back with a hit penned by DNA, Australia’s most well-known pop producers. Their newest single is a different path from their usual folk and acoustic sound. The pop anthem is a mid-tempo track playing with the current synth sounds that have been becoming popular this past year. The duo’s harmonies are slick, with the pair both performing solo verses to showcase their unique vocals. Could this be the pair’s new sound? https://youtu.be/NLSVgBeJkaA

Kiss the Sky – Jason Derulo Jason Derulo has just released his ‘Platinum Hits’ album, which includes 11 of his biggest hits to date, also featuring his newest single. The album is produced by Danish hit-makers Thomas Troelson and Tomas Eriksen. When a song includes brass instruments, you know it has to be a catchy hit, and Derulo hasn’t disappointed. The track is full of funk vibes, with Derulo’s signature smooth, falsetto vocals in the chorus along with the bass line. A feel good song that will catch on to radio very soon. https://youtu.be/L5NdDMVAMpE

Fresh Eyes – Andy Grammer The acoustic pop star Andy Grammer has released his latest track for his third album. ‘Fresh Eyes’ is a nice, soothing acoustic song that gives listeners strong Ed Sheeran vibes. While Grammer has only had mild success in Australia, his hit ‘Honey, I’m Good’ was well received worldwide last year. With only a guitar controlling the rhythmic role accompanying Grammer’s melodic vocals, it creates a song that is just easy to relax and chill to. https://youtu.be/xipU1hxO_nk
